After a long day working as a local anesthesiologist, Dr. Henry Cabrera swaps his white coat for the peaceful atmosphere of Lavender Waves Farm. What began as a simple hobby has flourished into both a successful business and his cherished home. The farm, teeming with freely roaming animals, attracts visitors from near and far who come to experience its natural beauty.
A Visionary Agricultural Entrepreneur
Dr. Cabrera embarked on a transformative journey in late 2016 when he acquired Lavender Waves Farm. His goal was to restore the land’s former agricultural charm while incorporating modern, sustainable farming techniques.
Nestled on 14 acres in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, the farm is a paradise for lavender enthusiasts. It features over 4,000 perennial lavender plants of various types, all arranged in harmony around a central gazebo, creating a breathtaking landscape.
Why Lavender?
“I was attracted by its multiple health benefits, including support for low blood pressure and relief from stress and insomnia,” Dr. Cabrera says.
The farm harvests lavender to craft a variety of products, including essential oils, lotions, and candles, which are carefully packaged and sold.
But Lavender Waves Farm offers more than just lavender—it is home to nearly 100 animals, including rare camels, chickens, guinea hens, ducks, geese, a white peacock, alpacas, and a watchful llama.
“A lot of people ask me what I do with the animals,” says Dr. Henry Cabrera. “And quite frankly, I just love the animals.”
The farm’s animal residents, including Gold-laced Brahma chickens and pilgrim geese, contribute to its distinctive charm.
Reviving a Piece of Rhode Island’s Agricultural Heritage
The land where Lavender Waves Farm stands has a rich agricultural history. It was once known as Gatewood Farm, a producer of bacon and sausage. Over time, portions of the land were sold, and the farm fell into decline.
“The property has long-established agricultural roots,” explains Cabrera. “But farming is a tough business. Eventually, the property was subdivided and sold off to subsidize the farming operations throughout the years.”
Upon purchasing the farm, Dr. Henry Cabrera set out to restore and improve it. He renovated the deteriorating barn, installed electricity and water systems, built new stables, and developed rotational grazing pastures for the livestock. A garage was also constructed to house farm equipment and materials.
“When I was figuring out how to design the whole thing,” Cabrera says, “it just occurred to me to put a gazebo in the middle and then have all the rows of lavender meet right in the center. That’s what we did.”
The farm’s carefully planned layout has contributed to an unforgettable experience for visitors.
Lavender Waves Farm Events
When the lavender fields reach full bloom in June, the farm invites guests to immerse themselves in the serene beauty of its surroundings. Unique experiences like lavender yoga offer relaxation and rejuvenation, with yoga sessions held every Sunday during the summer amid fragrant purple fields.
The peak bloom season, from mid-June to early August, features the popular “Cut Your Own Lavender” event, allowing visitors to stroll through the fields and gather their own bundles. Cabrera also shares insights on the farm’s history, different lavender varieties, and harvesting techniques.
A Luxurious, Rustic Retreat
For those looking to fully embrace the lavender experience, Lavender Waves Farm offers a luxurious one-bedroom farm suite above a converted garage, with breathtaking views of the lavender fields.
The suite is thoughtfully designed, featuring amethyst geode sinks, a handcrafted coffee table made from an 80-year-old wooden slab, and an antique wheelbarrow, blending rustic charm with modern comforts.
“I call the farm suite ‘luxuriously rustic,’” Cabrera explains. “I wanted it to be a luxury place yet a rural, rustic place that people could enjoy.”
Family Support: The Backbone of Success
While Dr. Cabrera is the visionary behind Lavender Waves Farm, he acknowledges the crucial role his family has played in its success.
“This was not something I created on my own,” he says. “To do it, I’ve had to hire people from the very get-go. I’ve had my family here, and the teamwork aspect has been important.”
His parents, who relocated from Miami to help build the farm, have been integral to its operations. The Cabrera family’s roots trace back to Cuba, where their ancestors were farmers before they were forced to leave due to the Fidel Castro regime.
“I’m sure [farming] is in my blood,” Dr. Cabrera shared on an episode of OnlyGood TV. “My grandfather used to tell me stories about it. I often think, ‘Where would I be right now?’ if it weren’t for the Castro regime because I would probably be in Cuba, maybe managing some big tobacco plantations.”
Thanks to his family’s resilience, Dr. Cabrera was able to build a successful career as a doctor and pursue his passion for farming in the U.S.
Lavender Waves Farm’s Remarkable Growth
The success of Lavender Waves Farm has surpassed all expectations. What started as a personal passion has evolved into a thriving business with a loyal following and glowing reviews.
